The Supernaturals are a Scottish rock band formed in 1993. Their top songs include ‘Smile’, ‘Sheffield Song’ and my favourite- ‘I wasn’t Built To Get Up’.
The song starts off with vocals by James McColl, a funny synth sound that becomes a sort of motif throughout the song and a tambourine. This almost made me skip the song when I first heard it, because it sounded a bit funny. Anyway, I’m glad I endured.
It then moves on to a beautiful part (which I guess is the lyrics). Guitar chords in the background, with the tambourines changing into a steady drum beat and vocals humming, along with the singing. What really makes this part is the simple pizzicato plucking of the strings, it gives this song a fleeting feeling, like it’s moving forward.
The chorus is memorable, and I usually find myself humming it. If you listen closely, you can hear some high pitched string plucks that sound quite out of place.
My favourite part of this song though, is about a minute and a half in. I suppose it’s the bridge. A lot of the instruments disappear, an acoustic guitar plays, and a sampled whistly noise plays in the background on loop. Over the top, along with the singing, is a synth sound, which I think is meant to sound like a violin. It is such a pretty part of the song.
The lyrics are telling the story of a guy that just doesn’t want to wake up anymore, honestly relatable.
